CargoBeamer : a new road-rail terminal in Hauts-de-France
CargoBeamer company specialises in the environmentally-friendly transport of semi-trailers by rail, has invested €32 million to build a first terminal in Calais in Hauts-de-France using its patented technology.
The new terminal can handle more than 430 semi-trailers daily, that’s equivalent to six incoming and six departing trains per day. Following the second phase of development planned for 2023, the terminal’s capacity will increase to around 900 daily transfers. And with machine automation, transfers are silent.
The company’s rail transport system reduces carbon emissions by up to 80%.
A strategic opening
CargoBeamer chose Hauts-de-France once again for the following reasons:
A terminal under major development
The first lane between Calais and Perpignan was launched in July 2021 with four round trips per week. A new route between Calais and Domodossola (Northern Italy) will be operational in October.
These two connections will serve as the main routes in CargoBeamer’s European network.
“We are delighted to open CargoBeamer’s first terminal in Calais today. We aim to build a European inter-modal network to create environmentally-friendly transport by rail. The opening of the Calais terminal is an important milestone for the development of our company and we want to create a truly international logistics hub.” explains Hans-Jürgen Weidemann, CEO and founder of CargoBeamer.
Public stakeholder support for the project
The German company was financially backed by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank, the Agglomeration of Grand Calais Terres & Mers, the Hauts-de-France region and the French government.
